SPECIALIZED SERVICES FOR CHILDREN: ABA Therapy

Programs & Services Offered
Next Step Residential Services works together with Family Services for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) and other family supports to determine eligibility for specialized services.

We provide intensive behavioral intervention based on Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) principles. Program plans include, but are not limited to, programs that deal with behavioral management, social skills, communication programs and individualized skill programs. These programs are designed to address specific skills and areas in which children with Autism have difficulties. A curriculum of goals is outlined and is approved by the Behavioral Specialist, Executive Director and Parents.

Programming is implemented and supervised either at the home or at the school. A one to one behavioral aide facilitates program sessions, and supports the child in the community. Behavioral aides are trained under an ABA training workshop and have on-going training and supervision. In addition, behavioral aides are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential by collaborating with parents and Behavioral Specialist.

Programming is reviewed and updated on a monthly basis. Children under Intensive Behavioral Intervention Programs also receive direct assessments on a monthly basis to determine progress and mastery of specific skills; this is required to determine each child’s unique needs.

Multi-disciplinary Team requirements will be fulfilled for each contract as per review dates and expectations outlined by FSCD.

Community Supports: To build on program goals and achievements, community support workers may be assigned to assist a child in the community. This is a very important component of these individualized programs as it gives the child a chance to generalize and practice each specific skill that is being learned in therapy sessions. Work will be completed and monitored according to the individual’s unique program plan.

Parent Support: Consideration of sibling issues, family dynamics, sensory issues and health concerns will be incorporated through ongoing work with parents and caregivers. Behavior Specialists will support parents by sharing strategies around behavior management, social skills, and how to have positive interactions.

Respite Support: Support that provides a break for primary caregivers on a temporary basis, respite will be provided in addition to other supports already in place.

Parental Involvement: Parental involvement is a key factor to the success of the specialized programs. Parents are encouraged to become involved in the programs and to feel empowered to become advocates for their children.
